Soma also known by its generic name Carisprodol is a type of muscle relaxer that works by blocking feelings of pain between the nerves and brain. Soma is commonly prescribed to treat discomfort caused by muscle spasms in the lower back. Soma should be used in conjunction with physical therapy, rest and exercise to help ease the discomfort of painful musculoskeletal conditions.

November 19th, 2009

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, in 2007, about 64 million Americans suffer from insomnia each year. Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep and stay asleep, resulting in a negative effect on your performance the next day. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder.

Sleep is a basic need of life. It is vital to our physical and mental health. When we sleep we wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle our day. However, for millions of Americans, sleep is something unattainable. If we don’t get enough sleep, every aspect of our lives can be affected including our jobs, relationships and health.

Insomnia can result in the following:

  • Inability to problem solve and concentrate
  • Weight gain
  • Falling asleep while driving or performing another task in which being alert is a must

Although the amount of sleep that one requires depends on a few factors such as age, there is a target number to shoot for. Most adults need between 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Teenagers and school aged children need about 9 hours. Preschoolers require between 10-12 hours of sleep and infants need the most at 16-18 hours a day.

If you are having trouble getting a good night’s sleep, you should tell your doctor. He or she may prescribe Ambien Cr. Vitamin D – Benefits

October 20th, 2009

Vitamin D is important to your body for strong, healthy bones and teeth. Without Vitamin D your bones will become soft and brittle, which make you more prone to fractures. What you may not know is that Vitamin D plays a major role in cell growth, which is why it is considered to be an anti-cancer vitamin.

Vitamin D is referred to as the “Sunshine Vitamin” because your body produces it naturally when you go in the sun. Sunshine is the absolute best source of Vitamin D. The human body can produce enough Vitamin D from the sun to last a year. Because of this, doctors have begun recommending 10-15 minutes of sun exposure a few times a week to their patients that are Vitamin D deficient. The only catch, you can’t use sunscreen. Sunscreen blocks your body’s ability to produce Vitamin D. As long as you limit your time in the sun and don’t burn, doctors say that you’ll be ok without the sunscreen.

In addition to building strong and healthy bones, Research suggests that Vitamin D can actually help prevent and reverse certain types of cancer such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. New evidence supports that women who don’t get enough Vitamin D, whether through foods or sunlight exposure, are more susceptible to getting breast cancer. Although many foods are not rich in Vitamin D, fatty fish are. This may be why fish such as mackerel, herring, albacore tuna and salmon appear to have anti-cancer properties. Lack of Vitamin D in the body can cause Rickets in children and Osteomalacia in adults.

Before you make any changes to your lifestyle, you should get your Vitamin D levels checked. Too much Vitamin D can be toxic, so before you take it upon yourself to add more, see what your levels are first. If it is low, discuss with your doctor what your options are. Women over 40 should already be taking a calcium supplement.

The Flu-10 Simple Steps to Avoid it

October 14th, 2009

With the Flu season rapidly approaching and the Swine Flu knocking on our doors, there are 10 simple steps that you can do to help keep the cold and flu at bay.

1.     Make sure you get plenty of sleep. Not only is sleep helpful for practically every facet of your life, not getting enough sleep can lower your immune system which will make you more susceptible to certain illnesses. The recommended amount of sleep for adults is 8 hours.

2.     Exercise. Exercise increases your ability to fight off illness. Not only may it help you stay healthy this cold and season, you may just lose a few unwanted pounds too.

3.     Drink plenty of liquids. Liquids help to flush out harmful toxins in your body.  Staying hydrated also helps keep the immune system in check. Your drink of choice should be filtered water.

4.     Open your window for a few minutes each day. Doing so will let the air pollutants in your home escape, which may be wreaking havoc on your immune system.

5.     Keep your home cool. Viruses love warm environments. When your nose and mouth dry out from the heat, it makes it difficult for them to trap germs. Using a humidifier is a very good option in addition to making it about 5 degrees cooler in your home.

6.     Relax. If you are stressed out, you are more susceptible to catching something. Try closing your eyes for a few minutes each day and either meditate or just breathe deeply. This is a good exercise for your entire well being too.

7.     Eat fruits and veggies. Certain fruits and vegetables are loaded with Vitamin C, carotenoids, and phytonutrients which actually boost one’s immunity. Eat such produce items as oranges, berries, green beans and carrots. Vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower are good choices too because they contain beta-carotene, which protects against free radicals, in addition to containing vitamin c and calcium. Shoot for about 7-10 servings each day.

8.     Avoid contact with sick people. Never eat or drink from the cups or plates of people that are sick. In addition, any plate or cup that they used should be washed in hot soapy water. Avoid sharing make-up, wash cloths or practically just about any item that a sick person has used.

9.     Take a multivitamin. Most people don’t get enough of the necessary vitamins and minerals. Taking a multivitamin will ensure that you get an adequate supply.

10. Wash your hands often. Most colds are spread through direct contact. Wash your hands with soap as often as possible for at least 20 seconds. If washing your hands is not always possible, make sure that you keep a hand sanitizer with you.

Should you need to buy medication for the flu or a bad cold, visit LegalMedsDirect.com. Your membership will give you access to trusted pharmacies with the lowest medication prices. Be sure to have a prescription from your doctor. It will be necessary if you want to buy medication online through the online pharmacies listed on LegalMedsDirect.com

Weight Loss and the North Carolina Fat Tax

October 14th, 2009

It seems as if North Carolina is about to become the second state to impose a so-called “Fat Tax” on its state employees and  it seems as if smokers will feel the impact as well.

Poor nutrition, lack of exercise and smoking are among the leading causes of preventable deaths in North Carolina.  By imposing this sort of fee, North Carolina is hoping to not only save the state millions of dollars but that these unhealthy people will become healthier.

How do they plan on doing this?  As of July 2010, tobacco users will begin paying more for their healthcare and in July 2011, people that qualify as “obese” will be placed into a health plan that will also cost them more money.  To determine whether or not an individual is obese, insurance companies will measure the employees BMI, Body Mass Index.

Last year, the N.C. health plan for state employees cost over $2.6 billion which included 600,000 state employees, teachers and retirees.  Last spring the Legislature had to give 250 million to cover bills due to rising costs, which left little money for claims. Over the next 2 years, NC will receive another $408 million from the state general fund.

Although how much money will actually be saved from the “obesity requirement” is still unknown, it is estimated that placing tobacco users in a special health plan may save an estimated $13million in the 2010-2011 budget.

Although there are justifications for and against penalizing unhealthy lifestyles and reward those that are healthy, insurance companies have been doing it for years. Some health insurance plans have been penalizing their smokers by adding a $25 per month fee to their existing health plan, while other insurance companies have been giving non-smokers a discount on their health care costs.

Will this encourage people to lose weight? Will certain exceptions be made for those with glandular disorders? Will insurance companies start covering more weight loss medications? It all remains to be seen.

It will be very interesting to see just how many other states will follow suit.

FDA Denies Connection Between ADD and Artificial Food Dyes Despite Evidence

October 8th, 2009

How many times have you heard a parent say that they don’t give their kids candy at night because they will bounce off the walls? Well, they just might be onto something.

Many of your kids’ favorite junk foods contain artificial food dyes. These dyes are found in such foods as chips, soda, cereals, fruit roll-ups; you name it, it has it. Food dyes have even been found in fruits and vegetables to help stimulate their color. Artificial food dyes are used in many foods for a variety of reasons. Very often, these dyes are used to enhance the appeal of these products to children. Although you may have heard that these artificial foods dyes are not good for you, did you know that these food dyes have actually been linked to ADD and other behavioral problems in children? If this is so, then why haven’t these artificial food dyes been removed from our foods? For over 30 years, studies have been done to support the connection between artificial food dyes and a child’s behavior worsening. It is no wonder that so many children are on adderall and other ADD medications.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has urged the FDA to ban certain artificial colorings in food because they have been found to cause behavioral problems in children.  The FDA firmly stands behind their claims that this is just not so. They claim that there has been no direct link to hyperactivity and artificial food dyes, even though there have been numerous studies performed that conclusively suggest this is so. For some reason, the FDA refuses to accept this evidence. They argue that these artificial food dyes are “strictly studied, regulated and monitored”; and are not linked to behavioral problems or ADD.

Of course the food companies that are making these foods with the artificial food dyes are standing behind the FDA, stating that these dyes are perfectly safe and that there is no reason to stop buying and/or eating these products. Could it be that manufacturers of food that contain potentially harmful ingredients are lobbying to keep these ingredients FDA-approved? Could it be that pharmaceutical companies have their hand in making sure these food dyes remain in our foods? Afterall, the more kids diagnosed with ADD; the more adderall and other ADD medication will be prescribed.

Since it appears that the FDA is not going to ban these dyes, I suggest that parents do an experiment of their own. Keep a food diary and write down everything that your child eats and then write down their mood and their behavior after eating these foods. This is an excellent way to see just what types of foods are having a negative reaction with our children. If you notice that after eating certain food your child is acting in an unfavorable manner, switch it out with a healthy food the next day. After eating more healthful foods, your child’s behavior should improve.

Could it be that profits are more important to food manufacturers (and the FDA) than the well being of our children? Removing these potentially harmful food additives would cause food manufacturers to research new, healthier (and potentially more expensive) alternatives.
